About Marble Plastering

History and Traditions and how Slaked Lime is Made

History
This material dates back to Roman times, where archaeologists found some Roman buildings using slaked lime and also decorative materials. Romans were very skilled in decoration and polishing. In the 14th-16th centuries, a young Venetian architect called Andrea Palladio used this kind of plastering for his buildings.

How Slaked Lime is Made
Slake lime is eco-friendly and originates from pebbles rich in calcium carbonate, which are put into a kiln and fuelled with large scraps of wood made into sawdust blown into the kiln which is running on coal, gas and electricity; then left in the ovens for baking, for seven days. After baking, the pebbles are put into water for them to crumble. It then becomes a dense liquid called slaked lime which is then filtered into maturation tanks. In the tanks, the slaked lime is a creamy substance ready to be manufactured and bought by skilled plasterers like myself.
